Mission Statement

The mission of the Division of Diabetes/Endocrinology at the University of Wisconsin Medical School is to maintain excellence in clinical care, education, and research. This is achieved by division members who collaborate within an established interdisciplinary team. The Division of Diabetes/Endocrinology operates four kinds of specialized pediatric clinics at the University of Wisconsin Children’s Hospital (UWCH). These include the Pediatric Diabetes Clinic, the Pediatric Endocrinology Clinic, the Pediatric Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Clinic and the Pediatric Fitness Clinic.

All clinics are staffed by board certified pediatric endocrinologists who are members of the University of Wisconsin Department of Pediatrics faculty, as well as nurses and doctors-in-training. These caregivers blend understanding, sensitivity and concern for each child with state-of-the-art medical care. Children and adolescents are seen at clinics for a variety of concerns, including diabetes, obesity, issues related to growth or pubertal development, thyroid, adrenal and pituitary gland problems. Clinics adhere to a multidisciplinary approach, relying upon the combined talents of pediatric endocrinologists, certified diabetes educators, pediatric nurse practitioners, nutritionists, social workers and psychologists when necessary. The Pediatric Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) Clinic was designed to help young women understand the diagnosis of PCOS and take control of their health. The multidisciplinary PCOS team works with each patient and her family to create an individualized plan that includes proper medication, healthy diet and exercise. The Pediatric Fitness Clinic focuses on educating children and adolescents about the importance of exercise, nutrition and self-concept. The Fitness Clinic tailors each exercise and nutritional program to a patient’s individual needs and interests.

Research Statement

An important mission of the Division of Diabetes/Endocrinology is to carry out clinical, transitional and basic research in areas related to diabetes, endocrinology and other metabolic disorders. Our ultimate research goal is to improve the health and quality of life of children diagnosed with diabetes and other endocrine disorders.
