  • Patrick McCarthy, MDI am from Richland Center, WI and graduated from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. I chose pediatrics as a specialty because I enjoy working with children and families, helping kids overcome challenges, and promoting healthy lifestyles early in life. The pediatricians here at UW were great role models and showed me how rewarding pediatrics truly can be. During my search for a residency program, I found what I was looking for right under my nose at UW! The faculty and staff here are welcoming and supportive. The residents are a hard working, supportive, and extremely fun group of people. My fellow residents are amazing to work and socialize with. The American Family Children’s Hospital is a beautiful, confortable, and accommodating place for families and patients. As a resident, I continue to learn everyday and enjoy serving as the primary physician for my patients in the hospital and in clinic. Outside of work, I enjoy sampling the food and beverage offerings of Madison, spending time with my fellow residents (especially at the Memorial Union Terrace), visiting my family, and staying active. Overall, I couldn’t be happier to be here in Madison to continue my pediatrics training.

  • Halie Anderson, MDIn choosing a residency program, I was looking for a medium-sized program in an academic setting; UW has offered me these things and so much more! My colleagues are some of the most kind, intelligent, funny and selfless people I have ever met and I am honored to learn and work with them. The faculty take a personal interest in my well-being and interests, and their priority is to help us learn and provide high-quality patient care in a well-supported environment. AFCH is a beautiful place to work with the most amazing ancillary staff around (i.e. nurses, pharmacists, child life, PT, OT, health psych, etc.) This program is incredibly responsive to resident needs and I feel like a valued member of the team! I have been able to maintain a well-balanced life, and my husband and I have loved making Madison our home! Madison is an incredible place to live, with a unique niche for every personality and interest!
    - Halie Anderson

  • Matt Egberg, MDI chose the Pediatric Residency program at the University of Wisconsin because I wanted to train in a supportive environment that allowed me to see the true breadth of pediatrics. Prior to starting my residency I knew that subspecialty training would follow. The University of Wisconsin best suited my needs and provided a well-rounded general pediatric experience that will serve as a solid foundation for my future career in Pediatric Gastroenterology. In addition to the fascinating and, often times, complex medical scenarios the training provides, I enjoy the mentorship and collegiality in the program. The residency leaders, including Drs. Wald and Frohna, fully support the residents and seek to improve the training experience based on our experiences and feedback. It was a wonderful 3 years here in Madison and I am proud to be graduating from this program.
    - Matt Egberg

  • Amy Falk, MDI was born and raised a Wisconsinite, so after attending medical school in Chicago, I was ready to come back for residency. During fourth year, I did a pediatric elective at American Family Children’s Hospital and was so impressed with what I found. Between that elective and my first few months as a resident, I’ve found the pathology to be diverse, and the general pediatricians and subspecialists passionate about teaching. Also, the program has an exceptionally family-friendly atmosphere; something I was really looking for. As far as the city of Madison itself, my husband and I have had a great time exploring! The Capitol farmer’s market is not to be missed; be sure to grab a bag of cheese curds! We also rented a kayak and spent an afternoon on Lake Wingra, which was a great way to spend a day off! We love to try new restaurants, of which there are many to choose from. There is sure something for everyone in Madison, but most importantly, the pediatric training is second to none.
