Critical Care Fellowship
Introduction
The Pediatric Critical Care Medicine (PCCM) Fellowship Program is committed to fostering an environment in which fellows achieve the fundamental skills and knowledge to be superb clinicians, competent teachers, knowledgeable investigators, and successful academic pediatric critical care physicians.
Graduates of the PCCM fellowship program are well prepared to practice and teach in any critical care setting.
Program Overview
Clinical Experience
Pediatric critical care fellows receive the vast majority of their clinical experience in the University of Wisconsin Children's Hospital (UWCH) Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, a comprehensive state-of-the-art 18-bed unit that cares for 600 to 700 critically-ill medical and surgical pediatric patients per year. Fellows also receive training in pediatric anesthesiology, pediatric sedation, and pediatric ground and helicopter transport. Elective clinical rotations are provided in adult critical care, neonatal intensive care, burn care, respiratory therapy, and other services.
Scholarly Activity
Fellows are expected to participate in scholarly activity that leads to development as a clinician-researcher, clinician-administrator, or clinician-educator. PCCM fellows can choose from any number of clinical research projects, including the pediatric sedation program and the pediatric intensive care unit. Fellows benefit from numerous basic science research opportunities that are available within the PCCM division and the Department of Pediatrics and throughout the UW system. Fellows are enrolled in the Clinical Investigator Preparatory Program (CIPP) and receive specific instruction in biostatistics, research design, and ethical issues in research. Fellows receive a certificate of participation following course completion.
