The Department of Pediatrics is pleased to offer a wide variety of elective courses and sub-internship experiences for 4th year medical students.
Pediatric Sub-internships are designed to provide a more in depth inpatient clinical experience for those students interested in pediatrics, med/peds, family medicine or emergency medicine, however, any interested student is welcome to enroll.
Pediatric 4th year specialty electives are outpatient-based electives with a focus on subspecialty pediatrics. These electives offer an excellent clinical exposure to subspecialty medicine. These electives afford significant opportunity for one on one interaction with pediatric faculty in caring for young patients with a wide range of conditions. The majority of the student’s time is spent in the outpatient specialty clinic with some time spent on inpatient consults.
General Pediatric 4th year electives are designed to increase a student’s exposure to general pediatrics in broader range of patient care settings.
Independent Reading and Research electives are available for students with a special interest in completing a research project in pediatrics. This course may be taken for a minimum of 2 weeks or a maximum of 8 weeks. Students are expected to identify a pediatric faculty member to serve as project advisor.
Visiting students: The Department of Pediatrics offers elective rotations to students who are currently enrolled in their fourth or final year M.D. or D.O. program at a school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education or Education Department of the American Osteopathic Association. University of Wisconsin medical students are given first priority for these electives. When there is space available after the UW medical students have gone through their scheduling program, the clerkships are open to 4th year medical students from other medical schools. Students enrolled in foreign medical institutions are not eligible for 4th year courses unless they are a resident of the state of Wisconsin.
