This program has been designed for primary care providers, including physicians, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, and respiratory therapists, who participate in the treatment of childhood allergic diseases. A noticeable gap exists between practitioners' awareness of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) asthma guidelines and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) guidelines for the diagnosis and management of food allergies and practitioners' ability to apply the guidelines to their practice. The program's planning committee has determined that due to the prevalence of these diseases, and their chronic and complex nature, it is important for primary care providers to have access to continuing education on developments in research and treatment.
