The goals of the research activities in allergy, immunology, and rheumatology are as follows:

1. To identify mechanisms by which viral respiratory infections are involved in both the onset and exacerbation of asthma
2. To evaluate T regulatory cell function in relationship to atopic diseases and asthma
3. To evaluate mechanisms by which inflammatory cells migrate to sites of tissue inflammation
4. To evaluate new and existing therapies in asthma through participation in asthma clinical research networks
5. To establish how gene by environment interactions participate in the expression of various allergic diseases and asthma
