Education

Medical Student Education

Highlights

  • Gwen McIntosh, MD, MPH, was appointed the School of Medicine and Public Health’s (SMPH) assistant dean for students. Prior to her appointment, she was clinical curriculum director at the SMPH.

Residency

Highlights

  • Simulation training became even more robust last year. Residents now participate in weekly sessions on emergency medicine and urgent care, and on non-procedural topics such as patient and family communication and ethics.
  • PEARL conferences are now held every week, instead of every other week. Two conferences per month are geared toward all residents, one is specifically for PL1s, and one is for PL2s and PL3.
These block conferences, which are co-taught with other specialties as needed, offer a case-based interactive approach to a clinical problem, allowing for deeper learning and discussion among residents. Pediatrics faculty outlined the conferences’ impact and benefits in an article in the June 2013 Journal of Graduate Medical Education.
  • Thanks to funding from the Wisconsin Rural Physician Residency Assistance Program, we now offer residents an elective rotation in rural medicine.
  • Residents had impressive research activities last year. Of the 15 who presented at the department’s 2013 Spring Research Day, six went on to present at the Pediatric Academic Society’s 2013 meeting (five posters, one oral presentation). Another resident poster was presented at a national sleep medicine meeting.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

Highlights

  • Nearly 180 attendees—including community pediatricians, family physicians, residents, nurses and midlevel providers—attended last year’s Seminars in Pediatrics. Marcia Slattery, MD, MHS, gave a two-part keynote address on the role anxiety and stress plays in children’s health, and when and how clinicians should intervene.
  • Other continuing medical education highlights included the Pediatric Advanced Life Support + (PALS+) program, the Wisconsin Emergency Medical Services for Children Conference and the Fetal Heart Screening for Congenital Heart Disease Course. Each event used state-of-the art simulation technology available at the UW SMPH Clinical Simulation Program.
  • The CPD office implemented a combination grand rounds/hands-on workshop format for professional development with the goal of providing more in-depth information for faculty. Programming included a session on a new resident handoff process called I-PASS, and a session on resources and academic avenues for quality improvement.
  • Pediatric Pathways, the quarterly CME newsletter edited by Michelle Kelly, MD, finished its second year. The newsletter reaches over 2000 referring providers each issue, and its success is due to the many department faculty who serve as authors and editors.
