Division Highlights - Hospitalists

The Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine provides outstanding family-centered, culturally competent, and coordinated inpatient pediatric care.

Our scholarly work focuses on system improvements, safety and quality of inpatient care, education in inpatient pediatric medicine, family centered rounds, and global health.

2013 Highlights

  • Sabrina Butteris, MD, was selected to serve on the American Board of Pediatrics’ Global Health Task Force, a group of national and international leaders that aims to develop a robust global health agenda to improve the quality of care for children worldwide.
  • Shannon Dean, MD, received the department’s 2013 Charles C. Lobeck Medical Education Award.
  • Shannon Dean, MD, Kristin Shadman, MD, and Dan Sklansky, MD, in conjunction with residency program director John Frohna, MD, introduced the I-PASS handoff bundle for signout of inpatients between services. I-PASS in an acronym for “Illness severity, Patient history, Action list, Situational awareness, and Synthesis by receiver.” The bundle is based on AHRQ Team STEPPS medical communication, a specialized electronic signout document, and environmental awareness. Research on this approach reveals a 50% decrease in preventable adverse events after implementation.
  • Michelle Kelly, MD, co-led development of a family-centered rounds checklist, an innovative tool for engaging families on family-centered rounds, along with curricular materials involved in its implementation, including lecture, role play and evaluation methods.
