Division Highlights - Nephrology
The Division of Nephrology provides comprehensive care for children with all types of kidney disease.
We offer a complete range of renal replacement therapies for both acute and chronic renal failure, with successful transplantation the ultimate goal for children with kidney failure. We are internationally recognized experts in pediatric renal transplantation and novel prednisone-free immunosuppression.
Research interests include corticosteroid-free maintenance immunosuppression in pediatric kidney transplant patients, pediatric kidney stone risk factors, impaired growth associated with kidney failure, peritonitis and exit site infection rates and quality outcome measures in patients on home dialysis modalities, and outcomes research in chronic kidney disease.
- Sharon Bartosh, MD, is leading the first-ever multicenter clinical trial to define the clinical course and outcomes of 350 children who have shiga toxin-producing E. coli-associated hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).
- Allison Redpath, MD, MPH, medical director of the pediatric home dialysis program, is leading the institution’s participation in the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions (NAHCRI)–sponsored Peritoneal and Exit Site Transformation Collaborative.
- Centennial Scholars award recipient Jesse Roach, MD, is exploring health care policy and outcomes, especially as it relates to health care financing, health disparities, and medical ethics. He has also been selected by the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology as a 2013-2015 Advocacy Scholar, an award supported by the John E. Lewy Foundation for Children’s Health. This program is designed to provide physicians with expert skills in the areas of advocacy and legislative affairs.
- Christine Sorenson, PhD, received a 2-year, $413,875 R21 research grant from the National Institutes of Health National Eye Institute (NIH-NEI) for her project, “Bcl-2 and ocular neovascularization.” She also received $50,000 through the UW-Madison/UW-Milwaukee Intercampus Research Incentive Grant program for her project, “Oxidative Stress Detection in Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia (BPD).”
