Division Highlights - Endocrinology & Diabetes
The Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes provides state-of-the-art medical care through four multidisciplinary clinics: diabetes, endocrinology, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and pediatric fitness.
Our research aims to improve the health and quality of life of children with diabetes and endocrine disorders and to prevent childhood obesity and its consequences.
2011 Highlights
- David Allen, MD, served as president of the Pediatric Endocrine Society and was selected as chair of its 10th International Meeting in Pediatric Endocrinology, which will be held in 2017.
- The J Biol Chem paper (“Differences between human and rodent pancreatic islets…,” listed below) authored by Michael MacDonald, MD, was the featured investigator research article in the 2011 Integrated Islet Distribution Program newsletter.
- Fellows Vanessa Curtis, MD; Jennifer Rehm, MD; and Peter Wolfgram, MD, each received the Pediatric Endocrine Society's (PES) Travel Award to support their travel costs to the PES Annual Meeting.
- Fellow Jennifer Rehm, MD, received two fellowship research awards in 2011. The first was the Society for Pediatric Research’s Fellow Clinical Research Award, which was awarded for her abstract, “Fatty Liver Disease in Overweight Adolescent Girls Measured with Quantitative MRI and MR Spectroscopy.” The second award was a $50,000 Pediatric Endocrine Society Research Fellowship Award, which supports her final year of research training in preparation for a career in academic pediatric endocrinology.
- Fellow Peter Wolfgram, MD, received a $15,000 Marilyn Fishman Grant for Diabetes Research from the Endocrine Fellows Foundation for his project, "The Role of Ethnicity and Race in Site Specific Fat Distribution, Inflammation and Insulin Resistance in Children." He also received a two-year, $100,000 fellowship award from the Genentech Center for Clinical Research in Endocrinology for his project, “Role of Ethnicity in Fat Distribution and Insulin Resistance.”
