2009 Highlights

  • Pediatric cardiology services grew considerably in 2009. First, we brought in brand-new, three-dimensional mapping equipment and forged a relationship with a top-notch electrophysiology (EP) cardiologist to create a regional “magnet” of pediatric EP expertise.

    We also expanded our echocardiography service by adding of state-of-the-art tools and several new sonographers.

    Finally, we enhanced our interventional cardiology program to serve even higher-risk infants and children.
  • In 2009, we began providing hospitalist services at St. Mary’s Hospital, our community partner, with round-the-clock services expected in fall 2010.

Inpatient Care

In 2009, our department had 8,052 admissions between our American Family Children’s Hospital, our coverage of the newborn nursery and neonatal ICU at Meriter Hospital and our hospitalist coverage at St. Mary’s Hospital.

Pediatric Emergency Department

In 2009, we achieved daily coverage by pediatric emergency medicine physicians at the UW Emergency Department (ED).

As a result, we had 9,653 ED visits in 2009, a 27% increase from 2008.
