Patient Care

American Family Children’s Hospital

American Family Children’s Hospital

Our delivery of top-notch care was enhanced with the August 2007 opening of the American Family Children’s Hospital (AFCH). We have served children from all Wisconsin counties and 49 of 50 states at AFCH.

The new hospital has:

  • 40 general care inpatient beds;
  • 21 intensive care beds;
  • six operating rooms; and
  • two procedure rooms.

Two preeminent features include:

  • A Positive Image Center, the only one of its kind in the nation to focus exclusively on children; and
  • A lead-lined MIBG room for advanced treatment of neuroblastoma, a difficult-to-treat form of pediatric cancer.

More than just a state-of-the-art facility, the hospital continues to win widespread praise for having a warm, soothing atmosphere that helps children heal.

Pediatric Emergency Department

In the fall of 2007, the department hired Michael Kim, MD, as chief of its Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine. Two more emergency medicine faculty, Gregory Rebella, MD, and Josh Ross, MD, joined in late 2008.

This new team has provided a consistent pediatric physician presence in our emergency department (ED), which has resulted in a 29% increase in pediatric ED visits.

Clinics

In addition to the specialized care provided at AFCH, the department also cares for patients at nine clinic sites throughout Madison and Dane County.

The convenience of those locations has helped the clinics to grow, with overall outpatient visits increasing to 135,131 in 2008.

Currently, the department serves the Madison and Dane County communties at the following clinics:
